“Flanders is a world leader in the chemicals and plastics sector, and the demand for sustainable chemical products will only increase in the years to come”, according to Frank Beckx, Managing Director of Essenscia Flanders. What does that mean for our country’s employment landscape?

Especially startups and small businesses will benefit from the sustainable investments in the chemicals sector. That was one of the most important messages to emerge from the second Chemistry edition of Upcycle your business transformation, a roadshow by 3W Executive Interim Management and the Business Angel Coaches Network, together with VITO.

Attracting the right talent

“Recruiting the right staff is one of the biggest challenges for today’s chemicals sector”, Frank Beckx continues. “Working digitally and working in teams are important skills given the growing complexity of the matter. Unfortunately, however, we tend to attract mainly foreign talent at the moment.”

“Without the influx of new talent, the sector is incapable of innovating sustainably. That’s why we should promote STEM education for Belgian adolescents. We have to inspire them and show them that they can contribute to a better society by working in the chemicals sector, for instance helping to find a solution to climate change”, Frank explains.

New business models

“In addition, we need to invent new business models and to stimulate entrepreneurship in the chemicals sector”, VITO’s Bert Bouwman adds.
